Something Borrowed was founded in 2019 by Christie who was looking to offer brides an alternative to the traditional buy-a-wedding-dress option. From there, Christie has been empowering brides to consider a more sustainable way of having the wedding dress of their dreams. When building the team and collaborating with partners, Christie has surrounded herself with strong females. It is important to Christie that the Something Borrowed team members, and the other businesses we partner with, represent, and give opportunities, to females in business.
Not only is it important to be surrounded by these women, but it is also important to find sources of inspiration from females who are shining the sustainable light on practices in fashion and beyond. So here are four women who are currently making us listen up, think twice, and question the status quo.
Known for being one half of Hemsley + Hemsley, two sisters with serious cooking skills, Jasmine goes beyond her passion for food, (and Ayurveda), to champion conscious fashion. From being an early trailblazer in wearing rental clothing to highlighting her desire to give second-hand and vintage clothing another life. Even when her first daughter arrived, Jasmine focussed on conscious clothing to create a unique, and guilt-free, wardrobe for her baby. Jasmine has been working hard to raise awareness of TENCEL, a fibre made from wood pulp that is being used more and more as a sustainable option.
A true inspiration proving that a zero-waste lifestyle is possible. Lauren has been zero-waste since 2012 after studying Environmental Studies and making a decision to ‘quit plastic’. Lauren has since shared her journey including tips on dying clothes that are stained instead of throwing them out, setting re-wear challenges asking followers to instead of buying garments, re-wearing something in a new or different way, or even an old way. Another champion of second-hand, we always dig into the back of our wardrobes to find that thing we haven’t worn in ages and treat it with the love it deserves.
Founder of By Rotation, Eshita is challenging the way we build and manage our wardrobes with her social fashion rental app. Focussing on empowering people to not only rent items from the community, but also rent their items out too. It really is all about a community of sharers. We love the opportunity this provides everyone with, giving more people access to designer goods, and the of course the community aspect. It really encourages people to consider what they have to offer, what they do need to buy and what they can rent instead. We are all about flexibility and having options, so we think this is inspired.
Aja’s latest post is just another example of why we love to hear from her. Aja explains the feeling of designing her own clothing and how it felt when she was wearing her linen dress and was asked by a stranger where it was from. Aja’s collaboration collection Lora Gene champions timeless styles that work for any occasion, for all body types and sizes and with the intention of making the wearer feel good. Aja also raises, and unpicks, important topics such as the global fashion waste crisis and offers advice and inspiration on how to buy ethically, upcycle, buy second-hand and mend. Giving life to clothes, instead of throwing them out, is something we are totally on board with.
